Lactoferrin is a protein which improves the absorption of iron and contributes to the body’s immune response, thanks to its bacteriostatic and bactericidal qualities. It helps protect the body against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, and also boasts anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Lactoferrin has also been seen to encourage the regulation of bone marrow.
Colostrum (the initial form of breast milk) is exceptionally high in lactoferrin, about seven times higher than later breast milk. Breast milk is between five and ten times richer in lactoferrin than cow’s milk. Lactoferrin is therefore a valuable additive to infant milk formulae. It is also useful in developing medical nutrition products for sporting professionals and weight loss, including cereal bars and meal replacements.
